Liff and Benvie poorhouse
Liff and Benvie Parish included Lochee - formerly a village, fast becoming an industrial part of Dundee, with important textile works and many Irish immigrants. The Parochial Board for the parish would provide support for the poor and this book is a record of their meetings. In this locale, much of the poverty would be intermittent, depending on the state of the textile industry at the time.
These pages record lists of the parish paupers, and categorises them into types such as 'Outdoor Poor', 'Lunatic Poor' and 'Ordinary Poor'. The Parochial Board was responsible for deciding who was deserving of support, and some people would receive regular small payments to tide them over in difficult times. Other people who were very young, old or infirm would be given shelter in the poorhouse.
The Dundee City Archives contain the official records of the town of Dundee from 1327 to the present day. The archives also contain private deposits including those from families and businesses which have been gifted or loaned and relate to the history of Dundee and the surrounding area.
